What To Wear in Egypt? Lessons from My Five Visits

Hello, fellow travel enthusiasts,

I’ve traveled to many places, and I hope my stories encourage you to join me on my next Travel with Maysa adventure.

After traveling to Egypt five times, I’ve learned that what to wear in Egypt can greatly impact your experience. Egypt is a country where history, culture, and modern life collide, and dressing appropriately shows respect while keeping you comfortable in its diverse climates. Let me share some tips based on my own journeys.

What to Wear and what not to wear in Egypt

  1. Stick to Lightweight and Breathable Fabrics

On my first trip to Egypt, I made the mistake of wearing synthetic fabrics like polyester. The result? I felt overheated and sticky, especially when exploring Cairo in the summer. By my second visit, I switched to cotton and linen, which made a huge difference. These fabrics are perfect for Egypt’s dry heat and allow you to stay cool and comfortable while exploring the pyramids or cruising the Nile.

  1. Embrace Modest Clothing for the Best Experience

Egypt is a conservative country, and dressing modestly has always helped me feel more at ease, especially in rural areas or religious sites.

  • For Women: On my trips, I found that wearing maxi dresses, loose pants, and flowy tops not only respected local customs but also kept me comfortable. Carrying a lightweight scarf became my go-to—it’s perfect for covering your shoulders or hair in mosques.

  • For Men: My husband learned that lightweight trousers and collared shirts are ideal. Shorts and tank tops are best saved for resort areas.

When I dressed modestly, I noticed locals were more welcoming, and it helped me blend in more easily.

  1. Choose the Right Colors

During my camel ride in the desert, I discovered the importance of color choice. Light, neutral tones like beige, white, and khaki reflect sunlight and are less likely to show dust from the sand. On one occasion, I wore dark clothes, and I regretted it—they absorbed the heat and made the experience less enjoyable. Bright, flashy colors also tend to draw attention, especially in quieter towns.

  1. Dress for the Activity

Every trip to Egypt brings its own adventures, and your clothing should match:

  • Temple and Mosque Visits: On my visits to mosques, I always carried a scarf and wore long skirts or pants to show respect. For men, sleeveless tops and shorts are a no-go.
  • Desert Safaris: Exploring the Sahara and the Merzouga Desert taught me the value of a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and long-sleeved clothing for sun protection. Comfortable walking shoes are a must—trust me, sandals won’t cut it in the sand.
  • Relaxing by the Water: Resorts allow more freedom, but at public beaches, I always chose modest swimwear like a one-piece swimsuit.
  1. Avoid Common Mistakes

Over my visits, I’ve also learned what not to wear:

  • Tight or Revealing Clothing: Items like crop tops or leggings can attract unwanted attention and make you feel out of place.
  • Heavy Fabrics: On my first trip, I packed jeans—they were heavy, hot, and uncomfortable. Stick to lightweight materials.

High Heels: Walking through the Valley of the Kings or on uneven streets in Luxor made me realize sturdy flats or sneakers are essential.
